heart made of origami cranes

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Recently, a woman saw my paper crane mobiles in my Etsy shop, and thought I might be able to help her with an idea. After learning a little more about what she had in mind, I decided to take the project.

::The Project::
This piece was commissioned as a wedding gift. It consists of red paper cranes attached to a high quality sheet of white paper in the shape of a heart.

working on: paper crane project

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I’m working on a custom project that involves a lot of red paper cranes. I thought it would be fun to share this little sneak peek, since I’ve been spending so much time folding!

red cranes

I was contacted about making a heart out of paper cranes, and I thought it would be an interesting challenge. My client will be giving this piece as a wedding gift, so that’s pretty exciting! I’ll share more pictures when it’s complete.

Have you been working on any projects?

custom design: birthday card for google forums

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I recently designed this birthday card for Google Forums. There is a forum for each of Google’s products so that users can get their questions answered and share their experiences using the product. This year marks the 1 year anniversary (or birthday) of a few of the forums. Google will be sending these cards to the users who have been the most helpful within the forums to say thank you.

Google Forums are used in countries around the world; we wanted to embrace that, so Happy Birthday! is featured in 25 languages. The pyramid in the center of the card is the Google Forums logo, which was designed at some point last year by another designer. I’m quite pleased with the way the design turned out, and it was certainly an exciting project!

The Details
★ Folded card
★ White envelope
★ Size A2 (4 ¼” x 5 ½”)
★ Printed locally on 100% recycled paper

Thanks Google! :)

custom wedding invitation: julie + tim

Monday, February 8th, 2010

A few months ago Julie contacted me about a custom wedding invitation. She provided all of the inspiration by telling me about her plans and showing me pictures of the bridesmaid dresses and the birch bark wedding cake that she and Tim had selected.

The invitation was accented with a birch tree and snowflakes, and a fern adorned the RSVP. The two pieces complimented each other and the wedding theme nicely.

I finished the invitations by gluing them to a green backing paper that matched the envelopes. I sent them to the couple tied with white satin ribbons.

Congratulations Julie and Tim! (They were married this past Friday.)

custom design: appointment postcards for dr. forman

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I designed this appointment postcards for Dr. Forman, a local dentist. He had a very clear idea about what he wanted, and I enjoyed collaborating with him and making his vision come to life.

I made the dental floss swoop into a “smile” and I changed the buttons on the phone so they’d look like dental tools (toothpick, toothbrush, toothpaste, & dental mirror). I really like the gentle reminder on the back that you “better start flossing now.” Ha!

folded valentines

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

It’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day! I think it’s my favorite holiday besides Halloween. I loved it looooong before I ever had a boyfriend. In elementary school I looked forward to making Valentines for my classmates and then dropping them into the specially decorated brown paper bags on each desk. Did you do that at your school? Plus, my mom always makes the best Valentines and a special meal of heart-shaped meatloaf and pink mashed potatoes.

Mostly, I just really enjoy honoring love — romantic or otherwise — with a special day. Soooo, it should be no surprise that I have some Valentines for sale.

Now available in my Etsy shop. They come as singles or as sets. Flat Valentines are also for sale as singles and sets.

All of the designs in the Little Miss Smitten collection are great for Valentine’s Day, so check the shop for availability.

lost in thoughts #40

Back again to share some inspiration with you. I think the theme today is eye-catching color.

2010 wall calendar from vanhoosedesign’s Etsy shop

Oooh! Would you check out all that color. This calendar would brighten up your work space, don’t you think? I especially like the way the colors coordinate with the seasons.

Audrey in the Autumn dress from SewnNatural’s Etsy shop

It’s those two little buttons. They just won me over! The mustard + blue-grey is a great color combination and the shape of the dress would be so adorable on a little girl.

Zooey Deschanel

I like to see movies if Zooey Deschanel is in them. I don’t know what it is about her, but I’m completely drawn in. Maybe it’s the big eyes? She’s seems different – in a good way – and I like her style.  She wears a lot of vintage clothing (I get that impression anyway), and it suits her (so does pink). Added bonus: she’s got a gorgeous singing voice. You may have heard her sing in Elf; she’s also in a delightful band called She & Him.

I recently saw Away We Go. Alexi Murdoch does the soundtrack, and his sound just works so well with the movie. Both the soundtrack and film are thoughtful and lovely.

Today’s question: What movies have you seen recently?

Thanks Jennifer!

lost in thoughts #36

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Hey there. As I was collecting ideas for today’s inspiration post, I happened upon a number of things that struck me as bold and beautiful (now I’m thinking about a soap opera that I’ve never seen!). These are statement pieces.

Double Breasted Wool Olga Coat from Red Doll's Etsy shopDouble Breasted Wool Olga Coat from Red Doll’s Etsy shop

Oh goodness. Please, can I have this? It’s so beautiful. It makes me want to put on a fancy dress, a silk scarf, and some mittens and spin around under the moon on a chilly winter evening. Yeah, I see all that when I look that this coat! Don’t you?

UPDATE: Tatyana, the creator of the beautiful Olga Coat, is offering 15% off this coat if you mention my blog post at checkout! What a wonderful offer. Thanks! {17 Dec 2009, 12:00 PM}

Olivetti Valentine from Poetic Home's Etsy shopOlivetti Valentine from Poetic Home’s Etsy shop

I’ve had typewriters on the brain since I saw these cool DIY housewarming party invites on Oh So Beautiful Paper. According to the product listing, this right here is the “Ferrari of typewriters.” I guess I have good taste! I love that it’s red and would really make a desk look snappy.

Citrine Druzy Cluster Necklace from Crumpet Cake's Etsy shopCitrine Druzy Cluster Necklace from Crumpet Cake’s Etsy shop

I doubt you’re surprised that I like a glittery orange necklace. Just look at that! Wow. This necklace makes me think of gemstone exhibits, in the very best way possible. As a kid, I used to go to the gem and precious stones show with my mom every year. This reminds me why I always loved that show!

A few weeks ago I mentioned how much I enjoy intricate paper cutouts. This commercial for the New Zealand Book Council brings the book to life with animated paper cutting. Very cool. I also like the Council’s message, so I’ll share a quote from their website:

Like no other human activity reading opens up our imagination. It enables us to understand those around us. It allows us to project the future and reach back into the past. Reading can entertain, challenge and educate. We believe that reading can transform people’s lives.

(video via a tweet by Julia Rothman)

Today’s question: What are you imagining today? I’m imaging myself at a sleek, red typewriter typing up a letter to a friend overseas. Then, dressed in a knee length twirly dress and a necklace bursting with orange gemstones, I’ll don my elegant double breasted wool coat and boots so I can drop my letter in a mailbox before continuing on my way to the used bookstore to pick up a story in which I can get lost. So I’ll ask again, what are you imagining today?

lost in thoughts #35

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Hi. How are you? I’m doing well and I’m looking forward to sharing some inspiration with you today. Enjoy!

Whale Tails Shadow Puppet Set from Orange Moon Toys' Etsy shopWhale Tails Shadow Puppet Set from Orange Moon Toys’ Etsy shop

This is a really beautiful shadow puppet set. It would be fun to make up whale tales and use these cutouts to tell stories to friends and family. The Orange Moon Toys Etsy shop is full of detailed puppet sets.

Zoo de ParisZoo de Paris

Honestly, I have no idea what this is, but I like it. I think it’s from 1937. The “A” in “PARIS” is fabulous. The the cartoon-y snakes are funny, especially compared to the more realistic lion roaring from inside the “O.” (via Agence eureka)

Book City JacketsBook City Jackets

These are pretty neat-o, huh? You could really design a room around books covered with these cool designs by Book City Jackets. I like the idea of using a book cover with a descriptive word (like fiction). (via Sub-Studio Design Blog)

This sand animation is beautiful and emotional. The artist, Kseniya Simonova, is the winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent, and she’s telling the story of what happened to the country during WWII. The Guardian explains that

Ukraine lost one in four of its population during the Second World War, the largest losses of any country and about 20% of the total deaths.

Simonova’s sand story portrays the human loss after the German invasion in 1941.

Today’s question: When’s the last time you covered a book? I used to have to cover books in middle and high school, but I don’t think I ever covered one that I owned.
